A roofing estimator title can cover very different jobs. One role may focus on industrial roof sheeting and cladding. Another may involve flat-roof refurbishment, pitched roofing or a combination of packages. Before comparing salaries, establish what you would actually be pricing and where your responsibility would begin and end.
Start with the work you will price
Ask which systems and project types make up the workload. New-build tenders, occupied-building refurbishment and reactive repairs can raise different questions about access, sequencing and scope. Find out whether you will price a defined package or help develop the proposed solution.
Be specific about your own experience. Explain the systems you understand, the documents you work from and the parts of an estimate you can prepare independently. If you would need support with a particular package, say so.
Clarify the tender process
Who reviews an enquiry before it reaches you? Who obtains supplier quotations, checks exclusions and approves the final price? Ask whether you will attend surveys, speak directly with clients or hand successful tenders to a separate delivery team.
An interview question worth using is: “Could you walk me through a recent tender from enquiry to handover, including the estimator’s involvement?” The answer should help you understand the workflow without needing confidential pricing.
Look beyond the salary range
Compare the working week as carefully as the headline pay. Confirm office attendance, site travel, tender deadlines, reporting arrangements and how competing enquiries are prioritised. If there is a bonus, ask how eligibility and payment are determined rather than treating a discretionary payment as guaranteed income.
For a developing estimator, technical review and feedback deserve particular attention. Ask who will check your work and how unfamiliar roofing details are resolved.
Prepare evidence of your contribution
Bring an anonymised example of a tender challenge. Describe the scope, the uncertainty you identified, the checks you made and the decision that followed. Use figures only where accurate and permitted. A clear explanation of your judgement can be more useful than a list of project values.
You do not need to have priced every roofing system to ask good questions about the role. You do need an honest account of what you know and what you want to learn.
